In July 2015, Illinois EPA released the IEPA Document Explorer, a helpful online tool that the public can use to search for, view, and download certain PDF documents.  The Document Explorer tool includes over 425,000 documents, including the following:

  • Air permits (construction and operating);
  • National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) water discharge permits;
  • Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) documents;
  • Site Remediation Program (SRP) documents; and
  • State Response Action technical documents.

This tool offers a few search options.  If you are interested in documents for a particular facility, you can retrieve records by entering the facility name, address, or IEPA Bureau ID number.  If you are interested in a broader picture, you can retrieve all documents in one city just by entering the city name, or all documents associated with a shared facility or site name.  Additionally, using the geographic search, you can browse over a map to view imaged documents.  The mapping tool is useful when a facility address is unknown, or if you are interested in facility documents near a certain site or geographic location.  The geographic mapping tool can identify over 200,000 locations in Illinois.

Some agency records are not currently available through the IEPA Document Explorer and can be obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
