The Illinois Pollution Control Board (IPCB) adopted amendments to three NOx related rules (35 IAC 201, 211, and 217) on August 6, 2009.  These changes impact turbines with a capacity greater than or equal to 3.5 MW and engines with a capacity greater than or equal to 500 hp.  The rule also include engines and turbines that are considered major sources (potential to emit 100 tons per year or more) of NOx and are located in the Chicago or Metro East non-attainment areas.  The regulations include requirements for permitting internal combustion engines, operating of emergency or standby engines, and maintaining engines as well as provisions for testing, monitoring, recordkeeping and reporting.
