The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has proposed several amendments to address compliance with the Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). The amendments primarily apply to the sulfur limitations in 35 IAC 214.
Highlights of the proposed amendments include:
- Limit SO2 emissions for specific sources;
- Establish sulfur content limitations for liquid fuels throughout the state of Illinois;
- Require fuel changes for coal fired-electric generating units which are located within or near SO2 nonattainment areas; and
- Correct or revise existing provisions.
Some ancillary amendments are also proposed for 35 IAC 217 (i.e., Nitrogen Dioxides [NOx] rule) and 35 IAC 225 (i.e., control of emissions from large combustion sources) to address changes being made at a specific facility. Additionally, IEPA is proposing a correction to testing provisions in Part 217, Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions that is not related to the SO2 rulemaking amendments.
Comments on the proposed rule are accepted through July 6, 2015 and they can be filed with the clerk of the Board or electronically. More information on filing comments and other details can be found here.
