The hazardous waste generator improvements rule (GIR) was published in the November 28, 2016 Federal Register. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) requires that authorized states adopt the more stringent requirements of the GIR by July 1, 2018. The less stringent or equally stringent requirements may or may not be adopted, at the discretion of the individual states. These rule revisions will impact all hazardous waste generators, regardless of hazardous waste generator category, and thus will impact almost every industrial and also some commercial facilities.

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) published a regulatory update in the Virginia Register of Regulations (Volume 34, Issue 14, dated March 5, 2018) which announced that the GIR will become effective in Virginia on April 8, 2018. Virginia will be fully incorporating all requirements of the GIR.

DEQ will be offering some complimentary training opportunities on the new regulation including a webinar on March 22, 2018 from 10 am - 12 am and four classroom opportunities during April, one each in the following regions: Tidewater, Northern, Piedmont, and Blue Ridge.
