The State Air Pollution Control Board held a meeting September 20, 2019. During the meeting, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) provided an update on the Virginia Council on Environmental Justice. DEQ has contracted with Skeo Solutions to conduct a study on environmental justice, which will involve interviews with stakeholders, board members, and DEQ.
The goal of the Virginia Council of Environmental Justice is to better integrate environmental justice considerations into the work of the DEQ. Environmental justice is defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, faith, national origin, or income, in the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies.
Other items on the agenda included public engagement and carbon reduction.
The next Air Pollution Control Board meeting is scheduled for December 6, 2019.
