Last fall, the Natural Resources Board approved the repeal and replacement of the outdated Wisconsin Chapter NR 150 (which was last reviewed and revised in 1987). NR 150 details guidelines for environmental analysis and review procedures so decision makers and the interested public can be informed on the effects of department policies and actions on the quality of the environment. These changes were largely procedural, attempting to reduce busywork for departmental staff and avoid confusion for the public. This effort began in 2010, was approved by the legislature, and went into effect the first of this month. During public comment on proposed changes, concerns were raised that the revision would result in decreased environmental review, but the revision merely reduced redundancy, not quality or depth of environmental review processes.
