While most air dispersion modeling is conducted using meteorological data from recent past years and historical or projected emissions data, models can also be used with real-time or short-term forecast meteorological and emissions data to estimate impacts at the present time and in the near future. In order to develop these custom real-time air dispersion modeling and forecasting systems, extensive knowledge on air dispersion modeling, meteorology, computer science, and web and database development is required. Two examples of these types of systems are:
- Real-Time Air Dispersion Modeling in Complex Terrain
A refinery located in a populated mountainous area with highly variable wind conditions needed an air dispersion modeling system using AERMOD that uses real-time meteorological data from an onsite station and processes it into an AERMOD-ready format using AERMET. The air dispersion modeling system will also read in real-time hourly emissions data for each source, and will include static building, receptor, and terrain data. Once all the data has been imported into AERMOD in the proper formats, the system will automatically run AERMOD and produce tabular and graphical results for the end user on an hourly basis. This system will allow the facility to make better operational decisions and address public concerns, based on realistic conditions in the local environment.
- Custom Solution for Visualizing Air Quality and Meteorological Data
A governmental entity needed a system for visualization, analysis, and post-processing of real-time and historical air quality and meteorological data. Custom desktop and server-based applications were designed and implemented from the ground up to meet the client's requirements and a secure server was also set up to host several of the applications, with remote access provided to the client. The tools allowed the client to assess the impacts of sensitive pollutant-emitting processes, and to time those processes to minimize ambient impacts.
By leveraging its scientific and technological expertise, Trinity's BREEZE® Software team has developed these and related custom solutions for clients around the world. In addition to real-time air dispersion modeling and forecast systems, BREEZE Software also develops real-time toxic release, fire, and explosion modeling solutions for clients. For example, using a customized version of BREEZE Incident Analyst or other available tools, BREEZE developers are able to create custom solutions for hazardous release scenarios that enable organizations to assess real-time hazards in emergency situations.
